A(nother) Home for Black Feminist Humor
Humor has always been part of how I connect as a facilitator, coach, and organizational development practitioner. It helps me build trust, celebrate wins, and reframe challenges when the moment calls for it.
My first dive into stand-up was in 2015 with DC’s In Laughing Color, a queer comedy workshop that was low-stakes, time-bound, and had one clear goal: find the joke.
Since then, I’ve been a student of comedy, longing for a place to practice and play.
So, I built one.
Introducing the Mabley Comedy Club
Mabley Comedy Club is an emerging Black, queer community of practice for studying and performing stand-up. Inspired by Jackie “Moms” Mabley and generations of Black, women, and queer comedians who used humor to speak truth to power, we treat comedy as a tool for truth-telling, joy, and collective liberation.
Mabley is not the first of its kind, but it is ours. We gather to write, experiment, and perform. Each cohort ends with a showcase in the warmest room, surrounded by friends and beloveds.
Our North Star, Moms Mabley, was a queer cultural trailblazer, activist, and genre-defying performer. She is widely regarded as the first successful woman comedian.
